About the residency
The Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) is a research partnership between the University of Oldenburg and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research. Founded in 2017, HIFMB investigates how marine biodiversity influences ecosystem functions and services, with a focus on the North Sea and beyond. Its artist-in-residence program, developed in collaboration with the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK) Institute for Advanced Study, invites artists to engage with marine biodiversity research. The program fosters critical and poetic responses to scientific inquiry, emphasizing process, dialogue, and the entanglement of ecological and cultural narratives.

Planning your application
Artists should demonstrate a genuine engagement with marine biodiversity, ecological thought, or environmental humanities. Proposals that articulate a clear research interest and a willingness to collaborate with scientists are favored. The residency is not a production grant; it values experimentation and dialogue over finished outcomes. Applicants should review HIFMB’s research themes and HWK’s residency logistics, and tailor their proposal to the specific call. A concise, well-researched statement of intent and a portfolio showing process-based or research-oriented work are essential.
