About the residency
Jentel Artist Residency, located on a working cattle ranch in the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains near Banner, Wyoming, was established in 2000 through the vision of the Jentel Foundation. Its founding ethos is one of generous, uninterrupted support: artists, writers, and composers are awarded month-long residencies with private studios, living quarters, and meals, all without cost or expectation of a final product. The program prioritizes the intrinsic value of creative work, offering a rare combination of solitude, community, and natural grandeur that fosters deep, process-driven inquiry.

Planning your application
Applications are accepted twice yearly, typically in January and September, with deadlines announced on the website. The selection process is competitive but open to artists at various career stages, including those without extensive exhibition records. Proposals should demonstrate a clear sense of purpose for the residency period, though finished work is not required. The review panel looks for genuine need for uninterrupted time and a willingness to engage with the residency’s communal aspects. There is no application fee. Artists should prepare a concise project description, work samples, and references. Given the remote location, applicants should consider whether the isolation and ranch setting align with their working style.
