About the residency

La Manchoza is a nomadic artist residency and travel grant program administered by the Hessische Kulturstiftung (Hessian Cultural Foundation). Founded to facilitate international exchange and research, it provides artists from Hesse with the opportunity to undertake self-directed residencies abroad. The program emphasizes process, experimentation, and the development of new work outside the studio, often in regions with distinct cultural or ecological contexts. By supporting extended periods of immersion, La Manchoza encourages artists to engage deeply with unfamiliar environments, fostering critical perspectives that inform their practice upon return.

Planning your application

Artists based in Hesse with a demonstrated exhibition or project history are eligible to apply. Proposals should articulate a clear rationale for the chosen destination and how the residency will advance the artist's practice. The selection committee prioritizes projects that show genuine curiosity and a thoughtful approach to site-specific engagement, rather than mere production. Applications typically require a project description, budget, timeline, and portfolio. Deadlines are announced annually; consult the Hessische Kulturstiftung website for current calls. It is advisable to contact the foundation for specific eligibility queries before applying.
