About the residency
Metropolitan Fukujusou, named after the winter-blooming Ice Adonis, is an artist residency program based in Hainan, China. Founded with the conviction that artistic practice thrives in environments of quiet intensity and cross-cultural exchange, the residency offers time and space for artists to develop work away from urban pressures. Its ethos is rooted in the belief that meaningful art emerges from sustained attention and dialogue, rather than from spectacle or haste. The program invites artists from around the world to engage with the unique ecological and cultural context of Hainan, fostering a community of practitioners who value process over product.

Planning your application
Artists should approach Metropolitan Fukujusou with a clear sense of how the residency's specific context—Hainan's landscape, culture, and relative isolation—might inform their practice. Proposals that demonstrate a thoughtful engagement with place, process, and cross-cultural dialogue are favored over those focused solely on finished outcomes. The application process is likely to emphasize project intent and openness to exchange; applicants are advised to articulate their motivations and potential contributions to the residency community. Given the program's scale, early inquiry and careful attention to application guidelines are recommended.
