About the residency
Millay Arts, located in Austerlitz, New York, is a residency program founded in 1973 on the former estate of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. Established by her sister Norma Millay Ellis, the organization was conceived as a retreat where artists, writers, and composers could work in seclusion amid the pastoral landscapes that once inspired Millay herself. Over five decades, it has evolved into a vital interdisciplinary residency, offering uninterrupted time and space to emerging and established creative practitioners. The core mission remains rooted in Millay's legacy: to provide a supportive, distraction-free environment where artists can focus deeply on their work, free from the pressures of daily life and commercial obligations.

Planning your application
Applicants should prepare a clear project proposal that demonstrates a genuine need for uninterrupted time and space. The selection committee values specificity over grandiosity; articulate what you intend to accomplish during the residency and how the environment will support it. Work samples should be recent and representative. Deadlines are typically in the fall for the following year, with a modest application fee. While the legacy of Millay is present, proposals need not engage with her work directly. The residency is open to artists, writers, and composers at various stages, though a strong body of work and a compelling plan are essential. Apply online through the website, and consider that the quiet, rural setting is best suited to those seeking focus rather than networking.
