About the organization
Monson Arts is a nonprofit residency program founded in 2016 in Monson, Maine, a small town in the state's rural interior. Established by a group of artists and philanthropists, it repurposed a former elementary school into a year-round facility with studios for visual artists, writers, and composers. The organization's ethos is one of quiet rigor: it prioritizes uninterrupted time, material support, and a non-competitive atmosphere over networking or output. Residents receive private studios, housing, and a stipend, with no expectation of a final exhibition or product. The program's remote setting and deliberate lack of structured programming encourage deep, self-directed work.

Taking part
Applications are accepted through an annual open call, typically in the fall for the following year. The selection process is juried by a rotating panel of artists and curators. Applicants should submit a concise project proposal or statement of intent that reflects a genuine need for uninterrupted time and space, rather than a finished product. Work samples should demonstrate a coherent practice, but there is no preference for medium or career stage. Given the remote location, applicants should consider whether the isolation aligns with their working methods. The application fee is modest, and fee waivers are available. Notification typically occurs within three months of the deadline.
