About the residency
Myoju is a creative initiative based in Shiga, Japan, operating at the intersection of contemporary art, cultural exchange, and local heritage. Alongside a jewelry brand using freshwater pearls cultivated in Lake Biwa, they develop projects that connect people through art, culture, and shared experiences. Their activities include exhibitions, workshops, community events, and an artist residency program located in Omihachiman, a historic merchant town near Kyoto. Through these initiatives, they aim to foster meaningful connections between artists, local communities, and international visitors. Myoju Artist in Residence welcomes international and Japan-based artists seeking time and space for focused creative practice within a historic cultural environment. Located in Omihachiman, home to the BIWAKO Biennale (https://energyfield.org/biwakobiennale/en/) and one of Japan's best-preserved merchant towns, the residency offers a setting where Western contemporary perspectives meet an Eastern historic landscape. At the heart of the residency is a small gallery café, which serves as a gentle interface between artists and the local community. Rather than a traditional exhibition space, it functions as a place for informal encounters, conversation, and everyday interaction. Artists are invited to live and work within this environment, where daily life, creative practice, and community engagement naturally overlap. The residency emphasizes process, reflection, and meaningful exchange over production quotas or fixed outcomes. The program is particularly suited for artists interested in heritage, sustainability, cultural dialogue, craftsmanship, and place-based practice
