About the residency

Nekubi Art Residency is an independent, non-profit artist residency located on the island of Crete, Greece. Founded in 2017 by a collective of artists and curators, it provides time and space for contemporary practitioners to develop new work in a supportive, critically engaged environment. The residency is housed in a restored traditional stone building in the village of Kamilari, offering studios, living quarters, and access to the surrounding landscape—a terrain that has long served as a site of myth, memory, and cultural exchange. Nekubi's mission is to foster experimentation and dialogue across disciplines, with a particular emphasis on practices that respond to place, history, and the Mediterranean context. Each year, the program hosts a small cohort of residents for periods of four to six weeks, culminating in an open studio or public presentation.

Planning your application

Applications are accepted through the website and typically require a project proposal, artist statement, CV, and portfolio. The selection committee looks for clarity of intent and a genuine connection to the residency's context—proposals that engage with Crete's landscape, history, or community are favored. Given the small cohort, competition is moderate but not cutthroat; fit matters more than exhibition history. Include a realistic budget and timeline, and articulate how the residency would specifically benefit your practice. Deadlines are firm, and late or incomplete applications are not considered. For the 2026 call, 'Land of Myths,' address the theme directly but avoid clichéd interpretations; instead, demonstrate a nuanced, critical approach to myth-making in contemporary art.
