Oak Spring Garden Foundation Interdisciplinary Residency

Space, time & creative practice2 open opportunities listed

About the residency

The Oak Spring Garden Foundation (OSGF) was established to honor the legacy of Rachel 'Bunny' Mellon, a passionate horticulturist and conservationist. Its Interdisciplinary Residency, launched in 2021, reflects Mellon's belief in the interconnectedness of art, science, and the natural world. The program provides time and space for artists, conservation practitioners, researchers, scholars, scientists, and writers to pursue creative projects while engaging with others who examine plants, landscapes, gardens, and the natural world from diverse perspectives. Set on a 700-acre sustainably managed landscape in Virginia, the residency encourages residents to explore the formal garden, library, and broader environment, fostering a network of individuals who value humankind's relationship to nature.

Planning your application

Applicants should articulate how their work engages with the natural world and how they might contribute to and benefit from an interdisciplinary community. The selection committee values excellence, openness to dialogue, and a willingness to interact with residents from varied backgrounds. Proposals should demonstrate a clear project plan that leverages OSGF's unique resources—the library, landscape, and gardens—while remaining feasible within a 2- or 5-week residency. Given the competitive nature (40 residencies annually), applications should be thoughtfully tailored to the program's ethos of fostering meaningful relationships around shared creative interests.
