About the residency

Art Omi, founded in 1992 as the Omi International Arts Center, is a nonprofit arts organization situated on a 300-acre campus in the Hudson Valley town of Ghent, New York. Its founding ethos centers on providing artists, writers, musicians, dancers, and architects with uninterrupted time and space to develop new work, free from the pressures of the commercial art world and urban distractions. Over three decades, it has grown into a multidisciplinary residency hub, offering programs such as the Art Omi: Artists, Art Omi: Writers, Art Omi: Musicians, Art Omi: Dance, and Art Omi: Architecture residencies, alongside public exhibitions, performances, and educational initiatives. The campus itself, with its rolling fields, wetlands, and distinctive architecture—including the Charles B. Benenson Visitors Center and the Newmark Gallery—serves as both a retreat and a testing ground for experimental practices.

Planning your application

Applications are typically open annually for each residency program, with deadlines posted on the Art Omi website. Prospective applicants should prepare a concise artist statement, a current CV, and a work sample that reflects their recent direction—not necessarily a polished portfolio, but evidence of inquiry and experimentation. The selection committees value clarity of intent and openness to interdisciplinary dialogue over institutional pedigree. Given the rural setting, applicants should consider how they might use the time and space; proposals that engage with the landscape, community, or cross-disciplinary exchange are welcomed. There is no application fee for most programs, and financial aid is available. Artists from underrepresented backgrounds and international applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. For the most current guidelines, always consult the official website before submitting.
