About the residency

Philotera AS operates the Spitsbergen Artists Center, a residency program located in the high Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Founded to support artistic research in extreme environments, the center provides studio and living space in Longyearbyen, offering artists the opportunity to engage with the unique light, landscape, and isolation of the region. The program is rooted in a ethos of slow, process-oriented inquiry, encouraging artists to develop work that responds to the Arctic context without imposing predetermined outcomes.

Planning your application

Artists should submit a clear project proposal that articulates how the Arctic environment will inform their practice. The selection committee values thoughtful, process-based approaches over finished-object orientation. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis; early inquiry is recommended due to limited space. Include a concise artist statement, work samples, and a realistic timeline for the residency. Familiarity with Svalbard's climate and logistics is beneficial but not required.
