About the residency

Pie Ranch is a nonprofit organic farm and educational center located on the California coast, near Pescadero. Since its founding in 2002, it has cultivated a working landscape that integrates sustainable agriculture, food justice, and youth education. Its artist residency, established in recent years, invites artists to engage with the farm's daily rhythms—from seed to harvest—as a living studio. The program is rooted in the belief that art, like farming, is a practice of care, observation, and community resilience. Residents are encouraged to create work that responds to the land, its history, and its stewards, without prescribed outcomes.

Planning your application

Artists should first familiarize themselves with Pie Ranch's mission and programs. The residency is best suited for those whose work engages with ecology, food systems, or community. Applications typically require a project proposal that demonstrates sensitivity to the farm's operations and a willingness to contribute to daily chores. There is no expectation of a finished product; instead, emphasize process, research, and reciprocity. Check the website for current deadlines and application requirements, and consider visiting beforehand if possible.
