About the residency

Pratt Institute, founded in 1887, is a private art, design, and architecture school in Brooklyn, New York, with a satellite campus in Manhattan. Established by Charles Pratt as a trade school for the working class, it has evolved into a comprehensive institution offering undergraduate and graduate degrees across architecture, fine arts, design, and information science. Its founding ethos emphasizes "learning by doing," integrating studio practice with liberal arts and professional preparation. The Institute's mission centers on educating artists and designers who can contribute to a rapidly changing world, balancing technical skill with critical inquiry and social responsibility.

Planning your application

For scholarship or admission consideration, applicants should demonstrate a clear point of view and technical proficiency in their portfolio. Pratt values work that shows evidence of sustained inquiry, risk-taking, and an understanding of material and process. The portfolio should be cohesive, with a strong artist statement that articulates the applicant's interests and how Pratt's resources might advance them. Deadlines are strict; early preparation and adherence to specific program requirements are essential. Financial aid applications require separate forms, and international students should allow ample time for visa processing.
