About the residency

R.A.R.O. Barcelona is an independent, self-organized residency program founded in 2014 by artists for artists. It emerged from a desire to create a flexible, non-hierarchical space where contemporary artistic practices can develop outside the constraints of traditional institutional frameworks. The program operates on a rotating basis, inviting artists to propose projects that engage with the city's social and cultural fabric, often culminating in open studios or public presentations. Its ethos is rooted in process, dialogue, and mutual support, prioritizing experimentation over finished products. By maintaining a small-scale, adaptable structure, R.A.R.O. fosters intimate exchanges among residents, local practitioners, and the broader community, positioning itself as a critical alternative to more commercialized residency models.

Planning your application

Artists interested in R.A.R.O. Barcelona should approach the residency with a clear, process-driven proposal that demonstrates a genuine engagement with the program's ethos of experimentation and dialogue. Applications are typically open twice a year for fall and spring residencies. It is advisable to research the current thematic focus, if any, and to articulate how the residency would benefit your practice at this moment. The selection committee values authenticity and critical thinking over polished presentation. Include a concise artist statement, a project proposal (if applicable), and documentation of recent work. Be prepared to discuss your work in an informal, conversational setting if shortlisted. Given the program's self-organized nature, applicants should also consider how they might contribute to the communal life of the residency.
