About the residency

The Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, founded in 1870 in Amsterdam, is one of Europe's most enduring and influential residencies for visual artists. Originally established as a traditional art academy, it evolved in the late twentieth century into a two-year, studio-based residency that prioritizes independent research, experimentation, and critical dialogue over formal instruction. Its core mission is to provide emerging and mid-career artists with the time, space, and intellectual community necessary to deepen their practice, culminating in a public open studios event and a final presentation.

Planning your application

Applications are accepted once a year, typically opening in January with a deadline in February. The selection process is highly competitive, with around 20-25 artists admitted per two-year cycle. Applicants should present a coherent body of recent work and a clear, ambitious project proposal that demonstrates a need for the Rijksakademie's unique resources: dedicated studio space, technical workshops, and a community of peers and advisors. The committee values risk-taking and critical inquiry over polished presentation. International artists are eligible, and a working knowledge of English is essential. Financial support is available, but applicants should be prepared to articulate how the residency would specifically advance their practice at this stage.
