About the residency

Rough Cut Retreat is an artist residency program dedicated to supporting emerging and mid-career artists working in film, video, and related media. Founded with a commitment to process over product, the retreat provides a secluded environment where artists can focus on editing, experimentation, and critical feedback without the pressures of commercial deadlines. Its ethos is rooted in the belief that rough cuts—unfinished, raw, and provisional works—deserve dedicated space for development and dialogue. The program fosters a community of peers and mentors who engage with works-in-progress through screenings, discussions, and one-on-one sessions, emphasizing constructive critique and artistic risk-taking.

Planning your application

Artists should submit a clear but concise proposal outlining their project's current stage and specific goals for the retreat. Emphasize the questions driving your work rather than polished results. Include a work sample that demonstrates your formal interests and a brief note on how you engage with critique. The selection committee values honesty, experimentation, and a willingness to participate in collective dialogue. Deadlines and application requirements are posted on the website; early inquiries are encouraged.
