About the residency

Shangyuan Art Museum, located in Beijing's Songzhuang art district, was founded in 2007 as a non-profit institution dedicated to supporting contemporary art and cultural exchange. Its core mission is to provide a platform for emerging and established artists through residencies, exhibitions, and cross-disciplinary projects, with a particular focus on fostering dialogue between Chinese and international art communities. The museum's ethos is rooted in experimentation and process, offering artists the time and space to develop new work without commercial pressure.

Planning your application

Artists should approach Shangyuan with a clear, research-driven proposal that aligns with the museum's focus on experimentation and cross-cultural dialogue. Applications for residencies and exhibitions are typically open calls; monitor their website and newsletters for specific opportunities, such as the Huangshan & Jingdezhen Studio program. Prepare a concise portfolio, artist statement, and project outline that demonstrates a willingness to engage with local contexts and materials. Given the competitive nature, ensure your work reflects a strong conceptual foundation and feasibility within the residency timeframe.
