The Bath Novel Awards – International Writing Competitions

Space, time & creative practice3 open opportunities listed

About the residency

The Bath Novel Award is an annual international writing competition founded in 2013 by novelist and editor Caroline Ambrose. It was established to provide a platform for unagented and unpublished novelists, with a particular emphasis on discovering new voices in contemporary fiction. The award has since expanded to include the Bath Children's Novel Award, recognising excellence in children's literature. Its core mission is to offer tangible career opportunities for emerging writers, with prizes that include cash awards and, crucially, introductions to literary agents and publishers. The competition is distinguished by its commitment to inclusivity and its focus on the quality of the writing itself, rather than the author's prior credentials.

Planning your application

Before submitting, carefully review the current rules and eligibility criteria on the official website, as they are updated annually. The competition is open to unagented and unpublished novelists, and submissions must be in English. Typically, entrants must submit the first 5,000 words of their novel, a synopsis, and a cover letter. Ensure your manuscript is polished and adheres to the specified formatting guidelines. The entry fee is a consideration, but fee waivers are available for low-income writers. Deadlines are strict, so plan to submit well in advance. Winning or being shortlisted can lead to valuable exposure, so treat this as a professional opportunity to present your best work.
