About the residency

The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan has long been a cornerstone of arts education and production in the Midwest. Its visiting artist residency, the Witt Residency, was established to embed contemporary practitioners within the academic community, fostering dialogue between students and professionals. The program reflects the school's commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry and public engagement, offering residents the resources of a major research university while expecting meaningful interaction with students and faculty. The residency is not a secluded studio retreat; it is a participatory fellowship that values process, pedagogy, and the cross-pollination of ideas.

Planning your application

Applicants should demonstrate a clear vision for how their practice would benefit from—and contribute to—an academic setting. The selection committee prioritizes proposals that articulate specific, feasible modes of student engagement, such as workshops, seminars, or collaborative projects. Avoid generic statements about inspiration; instead, outline concrete plans for your residency period. The application typically requires a project proposal, work samples, and references. Given the program's emphasis on process, work-in-progress or experimental directions are welcome, provided they are contextualized within a broader practice. Deadlines are firm, and late or incomplete applications are not reviewed.
