About the residency

Founded in 1984 in Johnson, Vermont, the Vermont Studio Center (VSC) is the largest international artists' and writers' residency program in the United States. Its founding ethos centers on providing time, space, and community to creative individuals at all stages of their careers, without the pressures of exhibition or publication. Set among the Green Mountains, VSC offers month-long residencies that combine uninterrupted studio time with the opportunity for critical dialogue and cross-disciplinary exchange.

Planning your application

Applicants should submit a focused portfolio or writing sample that reflects their current practice, along with a clear statement of what they hope to accomplish during the residency. VSC reviews applications on a rolling basis with multiple deadlines throughout the year. While the program is open to artists and writers at any career stage, the selection process prioritizes demonstrated commitment to one's craft and the potential to benefit from the residency's unique communal atmosphere. Financial aid is available, and applicants are encouraged to apply for support if needed.
