About the residency

The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) is a working residency program for artists, writers, and composers, founded in 1971 on the grounds of the historic Mt. San Angelo in Amherst, Virginia. Conceived as a retreat where creative practitioners could pursue ambitious work without distraction, VCCA has sustained a model of quiet, sustained support for over five decades. Its mission is to provide time, space, and community to artists at all stages of their careers, with a particular emphasis on the value of uninterrupted concentration. The residency is intentionally unprogrammed, allowing fellows to determine the shape of their days and the terms of their engagement with peers.

Planning your application

Applications are accepted through an annual juried process, with deadlines typically in the fall for residencies the following year. Visual artists should submit a cohesive body of recent work (10–15 images) that demonstrates a clear direction, along with a concise artist statement and a brief description of the project or work planned for the residency. Writers and composers follow analogous guidelines. The review is competitive; jurors look for evidence of serious commitment and a project that would benefit from uninterrupted time. There is no application fee for the fellowship, though accepted fellows are asked to contribute toward the cost of the residency on a sliding scale. First-time applicants are encouraged to apply, as the selection process is not biased toward previous fellows. It is advisable to apply well before the deadline and to ensure that all materials are formatted according to VCCA’s specifications.
