About the residency
Water & Rock Nature is an artist residency program situated on Thassos island, Greece, founded on the principle of deep engagement with the natural environment. The program invites artists to immerse themselves in the island's distinctive landscape—its marble cliffs, ancient olive groves, and surrounding Aegean Sea—as both subject and collaborator. Eschewing the pressures of urban art centers, Water & Rock Nature prioritizes slow, process-driven work that emerges from sustained attention to place, ecology, and the rhythms of the natural world. Its mission is to foster artistic practices that are attentive, site-responsive, and environmentally conscious, offering time and space for reflection rather than production alone.

Planning your application
Applicants should demonstrate a clear rationale for working in a remote natural setting and articulate how the specific environment of Thassos—its geology, flora, and maritime context—might inform their practice. Proposals that are overly production-oriented or require extensive technical infrastructure are less likely to align with the program's ethos. A concise artist statement, a focused project description, and a portfolio that evidences sensitivity to materials and place are recommended. Given the program's emphasis on process, work-in-progress or research-based proposals are welcomed alongside finished projects. Early inquiry about logistical constraints, such as travel to the island and studio facilities, is advised.
