About the residency

Women's Studio Workshop (WSW) is an artist-centered organization founded in 1974 in Rosendale, New York, dedicated to providing women and trans, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming artists with time, space, and resources to create new work. Its founding ethos emerged from the feminist art movement's commitment to elevating underrepresented voices and fostering artistic autonomy. Over five decades, WSW has become a vital residency and publishing nexus, operating studios for hand papermaking, letterpress, book arts, ceramics, and printmaking. The organization's core mission is to support artists at critical junctures in their careers through residencies, grants, and internships, with a particular emphasis on the artist's book as a democratic and tactile medium.

Planning your application

Applicants should demonstrate a clear project vision that leverages WSW's specific studio facilities—such as hand papermaking, letterpress, or bookbinding—and articulate how the residency would advance their practice. Proposals for the Artists' Book Residency Grant should include a feasible timeline and a thoughtful budget, as the grant covers materials, travel, and a stipend. WSW values projects that engage with feminist, social, or political themes, but all rigorous, well-conceived proposals are welcome. It is advisable to visit the website for detailed guidelines, apply early, and contact staff with questions to ensure alignment with the organization's resources and mission.
