Konstepidemin is Sweden’s biggest workplace for independent artists. Since the 1980s, they are located near Linnéplatsen in Gothenburg, where they house 130 professional practitioners of artistic disciplines, including visual artists and designers, musicians, writers, directors, filmmakers, actors, dancers etc. Konstepidemin is a central meeting place for the arts and culture of Gothenburg, and a catalyst for numerous ideas and thoughts in the fields of visual arts, literature, theater and music. Konstepidemin has run an artist-in-residence program for more than 20 years. They have five studio apartments and accept 15-20 international artists, writers, musicians, curators and speakers annually. The productive artistic environment, and the opportunity to develop one’s artistry and projects locally, is an important reason why artists seek them out, and often return. They aim to involve the artists-in-residence in public interaction, initiating both aesthetic and political conversations, and they welcome a variety of artistic positions.
An artist-run collective workshop in Bohuslän, Sweden, existing to provide professional artists with professionally equipped workshops for various techniques and materials, and also to be a stimulating meeting place. They have workshops for printing, ceramics, textiles, tufting, stone, wood, metal and photography (both digital and analog). The workshops are normally accessible for members only, but through the residency programme an opportunity is given to all professional artists to work there. They welcome professional artists to apply for the AIR and come and work in the workshops. To qualify you must already have sufficiently good knowledge of the subject to be able to work independently. When the artist arrives, they will be introduced to the workshops by the workshop managers. The residency is situated in the countryside with artist-dense area which, together with the local community, creates a valuable meeting place both between artist and between artists and the local community. The social infrastructure is well-functioning which gives the opportunity to enjoy social events as much or as little as you want.
Konvent is a late XIX century nun’s convent and textile colony that has been converted into a multidisciplinary arts centre. It’s a space for art and way of understanding and undertaking cultural practices that are rooted in the territory. Konvent is a creative space that breathes life into disused industrial heritage. It’s a former nun’s convent and textile colony that has been converted into an experimental laboratory both on a personal and artistic level where a diversity of projects converge, especially those which have no place in the frame of institutional culture. The residencies at Konvent have the goal of becoming a platform to aid artists and creators by providing the adequate conditions of space and concentration required for investigation in a unique environment such as the Cal Rosal textile colony. For 2023, they offer a new residency format in which they propose 7 different open calls with specific dates for each call. The intention is to give visibility and delve into certain topics, disciplines and contexts that they believe require special attention in the contemporary world we live in, as well as offer the possibility of establishing links with other communities, spaces and festivals. For the 2023 residency edition, they have chosen themes that move them personally, representing the diversity that exists within artistic creation and our society, choosing to emphasize groups and disciplines that have historically been underrepresented, and making true on the commitment that is given to us as a centre of and for contemporary art and culture, to evolve as a people and society.
