About the magazine

Founded in 1991 by poet and activist Steve Cannon, A Gathering of the Tribes is a storied cultural organization rooted in the Lower East Side of New York City. Originally conceived as a magazine and later expanding into a gallery and performance space, Tribes has long served as a vital platform for underrepresented voices in literature and the arts. Its mission is to foster a diverse and inclusive community of artists, writers, and thinkers, providing a space where experimental and marginalized perspectives can thrive. The online magazine continues this legacy, publishing poetry, fiction, essays, and visual art that challenge the status quo and reflect the vibrant multiplicity of contemporary culture.

Editorial focus

A Gathering of the Tribes Magazine Online publishes original works by traditionally underrepresented writers, showcasing emerging and established revolutionary voices of the time.
