About the magazine

A Long House is an independent literary and visual arts organization that takes its name and inspiration from the historic A Long House in Kampala, Uganda—a gathering place for writers and artists during the post-independence era. Founded to honor that legacy, the organization supports emerging and mid-career artists whose work engages with questions of home, migration, and cultural memory. Its flagship program, the Rajat Neogy Fellowship, is awarded annually to a writer or artist of exceptional promise, providing a residency, publication opportunity, and a modest stipend. The fellowship is named after Rajat Neogy, the visionary editor of Transition magazine, whose commitment to intellectual freedom and pan-African dialogue remains a guiding principle.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

A Long House accepts applications for the Rajat Neogy Fellowship through an annual open call, typically announced in the spring. Artists and writers from Africa and its diaspora are especially encouraged to apply. The selection committee looks for work that demonstrates a serious engagement with form and ideas, and that resonates with the organization's commitment to independent thought. Applicants should submit a concise project proposal, a work sample, and a brief statement of intent. There is no application fee. Given the fellowship's focus on process and community, the committee values authenticity and clarity over polished presentation. Decisions are usually announced within three months of the deadline.
