Editorial focus
Action, Spectacle is a biannual magazine based in Louisville, Kentucky, and Brooklyn. The magazine exists at the intersection of the socio-political, the cultural, and the arts—a public space for discussion and engagement. It puts a spectrum of voices in conversation online by publishing art, comics, commentary, fiction, interviews, memoir, music, poetry, and reportage.
Submitting your work
Before submitting, read at least one full issue or chapbook to understand the editors' preferences for work that balances innovation with clarity. For the Poetry & Prose Chapbook Contest, follow the guidelines precisely: use the specified length, format, and deadline, and include a brief cover letter that contextualizes your manuscript without over-explaining. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Expect a response time of several months; if you haven't heard back after the stated period, a polite query is appropriate. The press values writers who engage with its catalog, so mentioning a specific piece you admire in your cover letter can demonstrate genuine fit.
We read previously unpublished work in English year-round. Simultaneous and unsolicited submissions are encouraged. We employ the broadest possible aesthetic when we read. We publish poetry, flash fiction, short fiction, comics, interviews, essays, reviews, as well as some static graphic images. Hybrid and collaborative work, as well as translations are welcome.
