About the magazine

Allium, A Journal of Poetry & Prose is a literary magazine based at Columbia College Chicago, founded in 2013 by a collective of MFA candidates seeking a venue that honors both lyric intensity and narrative craft. The journal publishes two issues annually, featuring poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction that demonstrate formal ambition and emotional precision. Its mission is to foster a community of writers who value the art of revision and the risks of the unsaid, without allegiance to any single school or trend.

Editorial focus

Allium, A Journal of Poetry & Prose is a multi-genre print and online publication. Allium publishes three issues per year: Spring print, Summer online, and Fall online. Allium publishes diverse creative voices, recognized and emerging writers, and a variety of forms and genres from the traditional to the experimental.

Unsolicited submissionsYes

Allium accepts submissions via Submittable during two reading periods (typically September–November and January–March). They welcome simultaneous submissions but ask for immediate notification upon acceptance elsewhere. Send up to five poems or one prose piece (under 5,000 words). Include a brief cover letter with publication credits, if any. The editors appreciate work that reveals a clear investment in language and structure; they are less interested in genre experiments that lack emotional grounding. Response times average three to six months. Payment is in two contributor copies.
