About the magazine

ANTAE is an international, peer-reviewed journal of creative and critical writing based at the University of Malta. Founded in 2015, it emerged from a desire to foster rigorous, cross-disciplinary dialogue between literary criticism and creative practice, with a particular emphasis on Mediterranean and postcolonial perspectives. The journal publishes two issues per year, each featuring a curated mix of scholarly articles, poetry, fiction, and hybrid texts that challenge conventional genre boundaries. Its editorial ethos is rooted in academic rigor and aesthetic curiosity, seeking work that is intellectually ambitious yet accessible, and that engages meaningfully with contemporary cultural debates.

antae (ISSN: 2523-2126) is an internationally refereed creative writing journal. The editorial team is open to publishing all kinds of work written in English, from poetry to prose fiction, creative nonfiction, drama, experimental writing, review articles and more.

ANTAE welcomes submissions of scholarly articles (5,000–8,000 words), creative prose (up to 5,000 words), and poetry (up to 6 poems). All critical submissions undergo double-blind peer review. Prospective contributors should consult the journal’s website for detailed style guidelines and thematic calls for papers. Work should be original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere. The editors appreciate clear, engaging prose that avoids jargon and demonstrates awareness of current critical conversations. Simultaneous submissions are accepted only if notified immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. Response times vary; expect 3–6 months for a decision.

We’re open to anything, and leave open many, many doors! As long as our submission criteria are followed, then anything’s welcome.
