About the magazine

Austur is an independent literary and arts magazine founded in 2018 in Reykjavík, Iceland. Taking its name from the Icelandic word for 'east,' the publication was established to provide a platform for emerging and underrepresented voices in contemporary poetry, fiction, and visual art. Its founding ethos is rooted in slow, attentive reading and a commitment to work that resists easy categorization, favoring the quietly strange over the merely polished. The magazine publishes two print issues annually, alongside a rotating online supplement, and maintains a small, editor-run reading series in Reykjavík and Berlin.

Editorial focus

Austur’s (oosh-ter) mission is to promote multicultural voices from differing backgrounds and faiths from across the world—to celebrate how each individual honors God, family, nature and self-growth within its themed issues. Work that stirs the soul in remembrance of things that matter most, urges one to pause and reflect, and invites all to empathize and improve have a place within the magazine’s pages.

Austur accepts submissions via email during two reading windows each year (typically March and September). They prioritize work that demonstrates a strong sense of voice and a willingness to take formal risks. Simultaneous submissions are welcome, but please notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with your submission, and note that the editors appreciate a short biographical statement that contextualizes your practice rather than a list of prior publications. Response times average 4–6 months; queries are discouraged unless a submission has exceeded this period.

Please review our submissions page in full and adhere to our formatting guides. We’re very transparent about what we accept and don’t accept, but if any confusion does arise, you’re welcome to contact us anytime.
