About the magazine

Barely South Review is the literary journal of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, founded in 2008 and affiliated with the university's MFA program in creative writing. The journal takes its name from the geographical and cultural position of the South, but its editorial vision extends beyond regionalism to embrace a broad range of contemporary poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. It publishes two issues per year, with a commitment to work that is both formally engaged and emotionally resonant, often featuring emerging writers alongside more established voices. The review operates as a pedagogical and curatorial project, where graduate students gain editorial experience under faculty guidance, fostering a ethos of collaboration and literary citizenship.

Editorial focus

The Barely South Review ’s name refers to their unique location in the U.S. while highlighting the idiosyncratic blend of voices and histories that commingle there. If not impossible, they find it unwise to assert an exact “here” or “there,” and in this spirit, the Barely South Review prefers to feature voices that defy easy regional, thematic, or stylistic categorization. They seek great writing in all its forms.

Writers should submit work that demonstrates a strong sense of voice and craft, with attention to the nuances of language and structure. The journal welcomes both traditional and experimental forms, but favors work that is polished and emotionally honest. Before submitting, read recent issues to understand the editorial range. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with publication credits, if any, and a short bio. The review typically responds within three to six months; query after that period if you have not heard back. For poetry, submit 3-5 poems; for fiction and nonfiction, one piece up to 7,500 words. Always follow the guidelines on the website, as they may change with each reading period.
