About the magazine

Barricade is an online literary and arts journal founded in 2013 by a collective of writers and translators based in New York. Committed to publishing work that engages with political and social urgencies, the journal takes its name from the barricade as a site of resistance and collective action. Its core mission is to provide a platform for voices that challenge dominant narratives, with a particular emphasis on translated literature, essays, and visual art that confront questions of power, migration, and dissent. The journal operates entirely online, fostering a transnational community of readers and contributors.

Submitting your work

Reading periodOpen now

Barricade accepts submissions of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and translation on a rolling basis, with occasional themed calls such as 'Editors-At-Large.' Before submitting, familiarize yourself with the journal's aesthetic and political commitments by reading recent issues. Work that is overtly political, formally innovative, or in translation is particularly welcome. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter that contextualizes your submission, especially for translations, where you should confirm rights. Response times vary, but generally range from one to three months. As an online publication, Barricade does not offer payment, but contributors retain copyright.
