About the magazine

Beyond Books Magazine is an online literary and arts publication founded on the principle that reading and writing extend beyond the page into the visual, the digital, and the lived. Established as a platform for emerging and underrepresented voices, it publishes work that interrogates the boundaries between text and image, narrative and abstraction. Each issue is organized around a thematic prism—such as the forthcoming 'Prism'—inviting contributors to refract a single idea through multiple disciplines. The magazine's ethos is one of generous experimentation: it favors work that risks failure over work that performs safety, and it treats the editorial process as a collaborative inquiry rather than a gatekeeping exercise.

Submitting your work

Reading periodCloses in 12 days

Before submitting to a themed call like 'Prism,' read at least two prior issues to understand the magazine's tonal range—it favors work that is conceptually tight but emotionally porous. For written submissions, send no more than three poems or 2,000 words of prose in a single .docx or .pdf; for visual art, include a brief artist statement that explicitly connects your work to the issue's theme. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify the editors immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. Because the magazine is remote and volunteer-run, response times can stretch to three months; a polite query after that period is appropriate. Most importantly, avoid cover letters that summarize your CV—instead, use that space to articulate how your submission extends or complicates the issue's premise.
