About the magazine

Beyond Queer Words is an annual anthology series founded in 2012 to provide a dedicated platform for LGBTQ+ literary voices. Initially a small print zine, it has grown into a respected publication featuring poetry, flash fiction, short stories, and essays from both emerging and established queer writers. The anthology operates without a fixed institutional base, relying on a rotating editorial collective and volunteer efforts. Its core mission is to document the diversity of queer experience through literary craft, prioritizing work that challenges stereotypes and expands the boundaries of queer narrative. Each edition is organized around an open call, with selections made through a blind review process that emphasizes originality, emotional resonance, and technical skill.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Writers should submit only previously unpublished work that aligns with the current call's theme, if any. The editors value concise, evocative writing that demonstrates a strong command of language and a fresh perspective. Avoid overly didactic or clichéd portrayals of queer life. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify immediately if accepted elsewhere. Expect a response time of 2-3 months. Payment is in copies and a modest honorarium. Familiarize yourself with past editions to understand the range of styles favored.
