About the magazine

Black Fox Literary Magazine is an independent online publication founded in 2011 by a collective of writers and editors seeking to provide a home for fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction that might be overlooked by larger, more commercial venues. From its inception, the magazine has emphasized accessibility and inclusivity, publishing both emerging and established voices without regard to prior publication history. Its core mission is to champion writing that is emotionally resonant, formally inventive, and unafraid of vulnerability, while maintaining a rigorous editorial standard that respects the reader's intelligence.

Editorial focus

The aim of Black Fox is to publish both established and new writers. We welcome all fiction, but we especially like fiction from underrepresented genres and styles, including YA. We are also interested in creative nonfiction, poetry, black and white photography, and art.

Unsolicited submissionsYes

Writers should read several issues before submitting to understand the magazine's aesthetic, which favors concise, image-driven prose and poetry with a strong emotional core. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with publication credits, if any, and a third-person bio. Black Fox typically responds within 2-3 months; query only after that period. Avoid genre fiction, overly experimental forms without clear intent, and work that relies on shock value. The editors appreciate submissions that demonstrate careful revision and a clear sense of voice.

Please read submission guidelines carefully.
