About the magazine

Booth, a journal rooted in the tradition of independent literary publishing, was founded at Butler University in 2008. It emerged from the ethos of its predecessor, the "Butler Literary Review," but quickly established a distinct identity by embracing a broad aesthetic that values craft, risk, and emotional resonance over trend. The journal publishes fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, with a particular openness to hybrid forms and voices that resist easy categorization. Its mission is to provide a durable platform for writers at all stages, from emerging to established, while fostering a community of readers who appreciate writing that is both artful and accessible.

Editorial focus

Established in 2009, Booth publishes two print issues a year, usually in winter and summer. They invite submissions of art, poetry, prose, audio, lists, and literary comics. The editors welcome submissions by both emerging voices and established writers.

Writers should approach Booth with polished, original work that demonstrates a clear command of language and a distinctive voice. The editors appreciate narratives that take risks, whether through structure, perspective, or subject matter, but they are equally attentive to the fundamentals of pacing and imagery. Before submitting, read several recent issues to gauge the journal's range; avoid sending work that feels derivative or overly familiar. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify the editors promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Keep cover letters brief and professional, and adhere strictly to the stated word limits and genre guidelines.

Simultaneous submissions are welcomed as long as we are notified immediately if your work is accepted for publication elsewhere. We do not accept multiple submissions, and we do not accept previously published work. We no longer accept submissions by mail.
