Editorial focus
Urgent, atmospheric narratives; deeply inhabited characters; formal invention; precision of language; self-aware humor; and generally polished, thoughtful stories. The editors typically publish stories between 3,000 and 7,000 words. Please send only your best work.
Submitting your work
Writers should submit polished work that demonstrates a clear voice and a sense of craft. The journal receives a high volume of submissions, so adherence to guidelines is crucial: submit during reading periods only, include a brief cover letter, and ensure prose is under the word limit (typically 5,000 words for fiction). Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. The editors appreciate stories that feel urgent and grounded, with a strong sense of place or character. Avoid overly experimental forms unless they are fully realized. Response times can be slow, so patience is advised. Reading periods are announced on the website and via social media.
We accept only previously unpublished submissions, and we do not accept submissions by email; please submit only via our Submittable page. For fiction, standard manuscript format is preferred. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but we ask that you notify us right away if a piece is accepted for publication elsewhere. The editorial staff also reserves the right to edit accepted work in collaboration with the author or artist. Work created using generative AI will not be considered for publication. Due to the volume of work we receive we unfortunately cannot provide feedback on declined submissions.
