About the magazine

Founded in 1976 by Charles Henry Rowell, Callaloo is a journal of African Diaspora arts and letters that has become a cornerstone of contemporary literary and cultural criticism. From its inception, the journal has been dedicated to publishing new work by writers of African descent, alongside critical essays, interviews, and visual art that engage with the complexities of the diaspora. Its mission is to provide a platform for voices that have historically been marginalized, fostering a rigorous and expansive dialogue across disciplines and geographies.

Writers should familiarize themselves with Callaloo's aesthetic and scholarly range before submitting. The journal seeks work that demonstrates a serious engagement with the African Diaspora experience, whether through creative writing or critical analysis. Submissions should adhere to the guidelines on the website, with attention to formatting and citation style for academic pieces. Given the journal's high standards, simultaneous submissions are discouraged, and patience is advised as the review process is thorough. Book reviews should be pitched in advance to the reviews editor.
