About the magazine

Founded in 1976, Calyx: A Journal of Art and Literature by Women emerged from the second-wave feminist movement with a commitment to publishing work by women that challenges conventional aesthetics and politics. Based in Corvallis, Oregon, and operating as Calyx Press, the journal has sustained a dual focus on literary and visual art, offering a rare platform where poetry, fiction, essays, and visual art converse across disciplinary boundaries. Its mission is to foster a diverse and inclusive community of women artists, providing a space for voices that might otherwise be marginalized by mainstream publishing. Over four decades, Calyx has maintained a reputation for editorial rigor and a willingness to take risks on emerging artists, balancing established figures with new talent.

Editorial focus

CALYX Journal publishes fine art and literature, art, and book reviews by developing and emerging women and nonbinary authors and artists. CALYX is committed to publishing authors from diverse backgrounds. CALYX Journal is known for discovering many now well-known authors first or early in their careers.

Artists and writers should approach Calyx with an awareness of its feminist and interdisciplinary legacy. The journal seeks work that is formally accomplished and emotionally resonant, with a preference for pieces that engage with the complexities of women's experiences. For visual art submissions, particularly for prizes like the Marni Jenkins Visual Art Prize, ensure that images are high-quality and that the work demonstrates a clear artistic vision. Reading recent issues is essential to understand the current editorial tone. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if work is placed elsewhere. Calyx values work that challenges, provokes, and illuminates; avoid sending work that feels derivative or overly conventional. Include a brief cover letter that contextualizes your practice, but let the work speak for itself.

We celebrate all creative work by women and nonbinary writers. While we welcome works that address so-called “women’s issues,” we are by no means limited to those topics, and we encourage our contributors to write about everything from nature to professional careers to sports to bodies to caretaking to sex and love to trauma to domesticity to politics to mental health to discrimination to family to war to grief. And everything in between.
