About the magazine

Canary is a literary magazine founded on the belief that poetry and prose can serve as an early warning system for ecological and social crises. Since its inception, the journal has provided a platform for writing that is attentive to the natural world, environmental justice, and the intersections of landscape and identity. Its mission is to publish work that is both artistically rigorous and politically urgent, without sacrificing lyricism for message. By fostering a community of writers who engage with the pressing issues of our time, Canary has become a vital space for literature that bears witness.

Editorial focus

Canary is a magazine of poetry, fiction, and essays, which address the environmental crisis with its heartbreaking loss of habitat and species. The magazine is based on the premise that the literary arts can provide an understanding that humans are part of an integrated system. The editors also accept work that address the sustaining force of nature which humanity stands to lose.
