About the magazine

Cave Canem was founded in 1996 by poets Toi Derricotte and Cornelius Eady to address the underrepresentation of Black poets in American literary institutions. What began as a retreat for a small group of writers has evolved into a comprehensive organization offering fellowships, workshops, and public readings. Its core mission is to cultivate the artistic and professional growth of Black poets, fostering a community that sustains both emerging and established voices. The organization is rooted in the belief that Black poetry is central to the American literary canon and that dedicated spaces for Black writers are essential for creative freedom and rigorous craft.

Submitting your work

Reading periodCloses tomorrow

Cave Canem fellowships are open to Black poets at various stages of their careers. Applicants should submit a strong sample of original poetry, typically 10-15 pages, demonstrating technical skill and a distinctive voice. The selection process values authenticity, craft, and potential for growth. It is advisable to review past fellows' work to understand the range of aesthetics supported. Deadlines are annual, and guidelines are updated on the website. While the fellowship is competitive, the organization encourages poets to apply even if they have not previously published, as the program is designed to support emerging talents.
