About the magazine

Chamber Music America (CMA), founded in 1977, is a national service organization dedicated to supporting the chamber music field across the United States. Its founding ethos emerged from a desire to strengthen the infrastructure for small ensemble music, bridging classical, contemporary, jazz, and world traditions. CMA provides grants, professional development, and advocacy, with a particular emphasis on commissioning new works and fostering equitable access to resources for artists and presenters. Over four decades, it has become a central hub for the chamber music community, administering programs such as the New Jazz Works and Classical Commissioning grants, which have supported hundreds of premieres and tours.

Applicants should carefully review each grant program’s guidelines, as eligibility and requirements vary significantly. CMA values projects that demonstrate artistic excellence, community impact, and thoughtful planning. For commissioning grants, a clear collaboration between composer and ensemble is essential. Budgets should be realistic and well-justified. Deadlines are strict, and the review process is competitive; early preparation and adherence to formatting instructions are advised. It is also beneficial to articulate how the project contributes to the broader chamber music ecosystem, not just individual career advancement.
