About the magazine

Chiron Review is a long-running independent literary magazine founded in 1982 by Michael Hathaway. Based in Kansas, it has sustained a commitment to publishing accessible, narrative-driven poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction that often falls outside the MFA workshop mainstream. The journal's ethos is rooted in a democratic, unpretentious approach to letters, favoring clarity, emotional directness, and a plainspoken lyricism over academic experimentalism. Over four decades, it has provided a durable home for both emerging and established writers who value craft without pretense.

Editorial focus

Chiron Review presents the widest possible range of contemporary creative writing—fiction and nonfiction, traditional and off-beat, in a perfect-bound, softcover format, including art and photography. It has published many well-known writers, but their focus is on up-and-coming new writers. It looks for unpretentious literature that is accessible beyond the ivory towers of academia and outside the bounds of religious or politically correct restrictions. It celebrates eclecticism, diversity, honesty, and humor.

Writers should read several back issues or online samples to gauge the journal's preference for narrative clarity and emotional resonance. Submit polished work that tells a story or captures a moment with directness; highly fragmented or theory-heavy experimentalism is less likely to find a home. Follow the guidelines on the website precisely, use a standard submission format, and be patient—response times can be slow given the volunteer editorial operation. Simultaneous submissions are generally acceptable if noted, but always withdraw promptly upon acceptance elsewhere.

Be familiar with the market and carefully follow submission guidelines. Always include short third-person bio and postal address with your submission. Don’t make your editor ask for them! Buy sample copies when budget allows. We don’t have a submission portal. We accept email and postal submissions with SASE.
