About the magazine

Collateral is an online literary and arts journal founded in 2019 by a collective of writers and artists seeking to create a space for work that engages with the political and social urgencies of our time. The journal takes its name from the notion of collateral damage—the incidental, often overlooked consequences of power—and seeks to publish writing and art that examines the margins, the overlooked, and the entangled histories that shape our present. With a commitment to aesthetic rigor and ethical inquiry, Collateral has quickly become a home for voices that are formally adventurous and critically engaged, publishing poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art that challenge dominant narratives and imagine otherwise.

Editorial focus

Collateral is an online literary arts journal publishing work concerned with the impact of violent conflict and military service beyond the combat zone . The team is an all-volunteer masthead of women and nonbinary folks whose lives are affected by war and military service, and they are searching for art that confronts the “collateral” effects of war, including the immigrant story, the military family story, the reintegration and survival story, the protest story, and more.
