About the magazine

Founded in 1975 in Winnipeg, Contemporary Verse 2 (CV2) is one of Canada's longest-running literary journals dedicated exclusively to poetry. From its inception, CV2 has committed itself to fostering a rigorous and inclusive poetry community, publishing both emerging and established voices while maintaining a critical eye for craft and innovation. The journal's mandate is to reflect the diversity of contemporary poetic practice in Canada and beyond, with a particular emphasis on work that challenges formal and thematic conventions. Over the decades, CV2 has become a vital forum for poetic discourse, offering not only publication but also professional development opportunities through its annual contests, such as The Foster Poetry Prize, and its mentorship programs for emerging poets.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Poets should familiarize themselves with CV2's aesthetic range by reading recent issues, available in print and select digital formats. Submissions are accepted year-round, but contest deadlines (like The Foster Poetry Prize) are strict. Send 3-5 poems in a single file, with a brief cover letter. CV2 values precise language, emotional resonance, and structural awareness; avoid overly derivative or workshop-polished pieces. Simultaneous submissions are accepted if notified promptly. Expect response times of 3-6 months. For contest entries, adhere to theme or judge-specific guidelines and include the entry fee. CV2 encourages submissions from underrepresented voices and offers feedback on solicited work only.
