About the magazine

Cruel Garters is a literary journal founded on the principle that poetry should be as immediate and unsettling as a misstep. Since its inception, it has operated as a lean, web-based publication, releasing issues that are as much curated provocations as they are collections of verse. The journal's ethos is rooted in a commitment to the raw, the strange, and the unadorned, favoring work that resists easy consumption and instead lingers like a splinter. Its mission is to provide a platform for voices that might otherwise be drowned out by more polished, conventional outlets, and to foster a community of readers and writers who value the visceral over the merely virtuosic.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Cruel Garters accepts poetry submissions for upcoming issues, typically reading year-round. Before sending work, read at least one full issue to understand the journal's taste for the stark, the odd, and the unadorned. Submit 3-5 poems in a single document, with a brief cover letter that avoids biography in favor of a note on your poetics. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but notify immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. The editors value concision and directness; avoid ornate language in your cover letter as much as in your poems. Response times vary, but queries after three months are reasonable.
