About the magazine

Dappled Things is a quarterly literary journal founded in 2005 by a group of writers associated with the University of Notre Dame. Taking its name from Gerard Manley Hopkins's poem "Pied Beauty," the journal is dedicated to publishing fiction, poetry, essays, and visual art that engage with the Catholic intellectual and artistic tradition. Its mission is to foster work that is both artistically rigorous and spiritually resonant, without being didactic or confined to a single aesthetic mode. Over the years, it has provided a platform for emerging and established writers who explore questions of faith, doubt, and transcendence through a contemporary lens.

Editorial focus

Dappled Things is a Catholic literary magazine produced in partnership with the Collegium Institute for Catholic Thought & Culture.

Simultaneous submissionsYes
Unsolicited submissionsYes

Before submitting, read several issues to understand the journal's aesthetic range and tone. Dappled Things seeks work that is crafted with care and engages authentically with its themes, rather than merely illustrating doctrine. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Expect response times of several months; patience is advised. Include a brief cover letter that situates your work within the journal's mission, but let the writing speak for itself.

Rather than give you a pat answer, we invite you as a contributor to help us explore what you think Catholic literature is. We especially value work that creatively engages Christianity’s rich tradition in art, thought, and practice, that is unflinchingly honest, that innovates in the light of tradition, and, in the words of J.F. Powers, has “one foot in this world and one in the next.”
