Editorial focus
Deep South Magazine is committed to being a forum for Southern writers and showcasing Southern literature and accepts submissions of original fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. For fiction, they do themed calls throughout the year. Poetry is accepted from January 1 to February 14 to run during National Poetry Month in April.
Submitting your work
Writers and artists should familiarize themselves with the magazine's aesthetic by reading recent issues. Submissions should reflect a genuine engagement with Southern themes, avoiding clichés and instead offering fresh, nuanced perspectives. Follow the guidelines on the website carefully, and submit polished work that demonstrates both craft and a deep connection to the region.
Only electronic submissions will be considered. Please state your connection to the South in your query and also include a short bio about yourself. Our reading period for poetry (published during the month of April) opens on January 1. We will only accept fiction or nonfiction when certain themes are announced. Please check our website for these reading periods.
