About the magazine
Engaged Scholarship & Learning at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is an institutional initiative that integrates community-based research, service-learning, and reciprocal partnerships into the university's academic framework. Rooted in the distinct cultural and social context of the Rio Grande Valley—a binational, predominantly Latinx region—the program emerged from UTRGV's founding mission to serve the public good through accessible education and regional engagement. It supports faculty in developing courses and projects that address local needs while advancing students' civic and academic learning. The initiative operates as a hub for pedagogical and scholarly innovation, offering resources such as service-learning designation, community partner matching, and assessment support. Its ethos is collaborative rather than extractive, emphasizing long-term relationships with community organizations and prioritizing mutual benefit. By foregrounding the knowledge and priorities of the Valley's communities, Engaged Scholarship & Learning seeks to redefine academic expertise as something co-created with those outside the university.
Submitting your work
Reading periodOpen now
This opportunity is open exclusively to UTRGV faculty. Before submitting a Service Learning Designation Form, faculty should consult with the Engaged Scholarship & Learning office to clarify criteria and expectations. Proposals should demonstrate genuine collaboration with community partners, articulate clear learning outcomes for students, and outline a plan for reciprocal benefit. Avoid framing community involvement as mere volunteerism; instead, show how the project integrates community knowledge and addresses locally identified priorities. Early dialogue with the office is strongly encouraged to align your course or project with the program's principles.
