About the magazine

EVENT is a Canadian literary magazine founded in 1971 at Douglas College in New Westminster, British Columbia. It has long been a vital venue for poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction, with a particular commitment to fostering emerging writers alongside established voices. The magazine's annual contests, including the Creative Non-Fiction Contest, are central to its mission, offering publication and monetary awards that help sustain the Canadian literary ecosystem. EVENT's editorial stance is characterized by a careful attention to craft and a openness to diverse perspectives, without aligning itself with any single aesthetic school.

Editorial focus

For 54 years, EVENT has published the very best in contemporary new poetry and prose. It is one of Western Canada’s longest-running literary magazines and welcomes submissions written in English from around the world. Each issue of EVENT includes high-quality fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and book reviews, and it features emerging and established writers side-by-side in our pages.

For the student creative non-fiction contest, submit work that demonstrates a strong narrative voice and thoughtful engagement with real-life experience. Avoid overly familiar themes unless you bring a fresh perspective. Follow the contest guidelines precisely: check word limits, deadline, and entry fee. Since this is a student category, include proof of enrollment if required. Proofread meticulously; EVENT's editors value clean, polished prose. Simultaneous submissions are often accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Reading recent issues will give you a sense of the magazine's range and help you calibrate your submission.

In fiction, we’re looking for compelling characters, plots that surprise us, narratives that move us, stories that have something new to say. In poetry, we love poems that are lyrical without being overwrought, and are profound without being pretentious. We look for honesty of emotion, and images that arrest us. In nonfiction, we’re looking for real-life experiences told as riveting narratives with distinct voices. We publish essays that feel artful and true.
